Other Side of NightOther Side of Night by Chris Martin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

This is a wonderful YA novella. I really enjoyed it!

Luke Farmer is a fantastic character. He is 12 years old, and he is very kind and well mannered. I liked him very much.

This is an exciting young adult novella for children between the ages of 9 and 14. I couldn't put it down! This book is full of danger and adventure, and will keep a young reader engrossed from beginning to end. I liked meeting Luke's friends. They are completely different in temperament, but their differences compliment each other. Bobby Jenkins is a quiet, intelligent young man who is bordering on being a maths genius. Ethan Moore is loud and a bit of a drama queen, but he has a good heart. The story starts off quite slowly, but it soon builds up into a mystery when the boys find a missing phone. The bad guys are not the nicest of people and are quite scary. I loved the chase scenes, because they ramped up my heart beat and I could "see" them quite clearly. I was a little disappointed when I reached the end because I wanted the story to keep going. However, the ending was well rounded and all's well that end's well (as they say).

Chris Martin has written a fast paced mystery adventure full of suspense for children. I loved his writing style and his characters come alive on the page! I look forward to reading more of his books in the future.

I highly recommend this book to both boys and girls aged 9 to 14. However, I also recommend this book to adults who love to read younger YA books. - Lynn Worton

Heart Of The Wolf (Eye Of The Storm, #3)Heart Of The Wolf by Dianna Hardy
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the third book in the Eye of the Storm series. I LOVED IT!

Lydia is a fantastic character! I enjoyed watching Lydia grow into her new life - her alpha tendencies are beginning to show and her first change is fast approaching with the full moon on it's way.

Wow! Where do I start?! I have been dying to get my hands on this book since before it was even written! I knew I would be in for a roller coaster ride of epic proportions, but O.M.G. it surpassed my wildest dreams! I was hooked from the first page and couldn't put the book down - I even read into the small hours to finish it! The characters are quite lifelike. Taylor, Ryan and Lawrence are as hot as ever. However, there is a development within the foursome's dynamics that intrigued me. I will say that I was a bit shocked at first, but after thinking about it, it made perfect sense. In the meantime, Amil is on a quest of his own in Egypt; Selena is still after Taylor and will stop at nothing to get him and Sarah, Beth and Holly are trying to solve the mystery of Sarah's memory loss. Will they all succeed?
The story is masterfully told, and there are plenty of twists and turns to keep things interesting. The sensual heat factor in the story is hot enough to start a fire, and the ending has left me wanting more! I cannot wait to read the next book as soon as possible!

Dianna Hardy is one of my favorite authors. I love her writing style, which is fast paced and fluid. Reading her books are a joy, and I will continue to read them for as long as she keeps writing them.

Due to the explicit sensual content and some bad language, I do not recommend this book for younger readers. However, I highly recommend this book (and series) if you love HOT erotic paranormal romances with sexy werewolves. - Lynn Worton

Book Review of Until Today: Stories and Poems on Life as I Know It by Jerry M. White

Synopsis:

Our journey through life begins new each morning. The totality of these days, one day at a time, is our life experience. It is different for each of us. There are, however, many similarities in our personal experiences. We each experience joy, grief, exuberance, humiliation, optimism, doubt, genius, foolishness, and of course, courage, and fear. We each are so similar in so many different ways it is hard to not see how connected we all are. My hope is to convey my feelings on my experiences so you know you are not alone in your journey each new morning to the next. This new book regards many such experiences in your day's journey that are similar to mine. I hope you find some resonance and solace through events during my life's journey Until Today.

Until Today: Stories and Poems on Life as I Know ItUntil Today: Stories and Poems on Life as I Know It by Jerry M. White
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

I am not a big reader of poems or memoirs, but I thought I would give this book a chance. I'm glad I did, because I really enjoyed it!

This book is a collection of thoughts, dreams, hopes and anecdotes, sprinkled with poems that express the emotions of the author at any given time - joy, anger, love, despair and faith. The author is a Christian, and his writing shows his love of God. However, this book is not at all preachy, or a "follow my faith or else" type of book. This is one man's journey to find the faith and strength to live his life one day at a time with his family. It is an incredibly touching and deeply moving story. The poems can be rather personal, or a social commentary of the time, but they resonated with me. I giggled at a few of the stories, but there are some extremely poignant ones that brought tears to my eyes. Poetry is really a very subjective genre, but the way this author has expressed himself shows that he was not afraid to bare his soul.

Jerry M. White has written a wonderful and touching book. His words open a small window into his life, but shows his full character - a loving husband, father and grandfather. I would definitely read more books by this author.

I highly recommend this book if you love Christian literature, memoirs or poetry genres. - Lynn Worton

Review:

Redemption (Soul, #1)Redemption by C.J. Barry
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

This is a very intriguing read and the first book in a brand new series. I loved it!

Reya Sinclair is a fascinating character. She is a Redeemer, a type of intermediary who gives souls a chance to atone for their sins, but who is also atoning for her own. She has been to Hell and back, literally. I liked her spunk, of which she has a lot! However, I also think she is rather hard on herself.

Thane Driscoll is a police detective, who has become a bit jaded and disillusioned over the years. I liked this character. He has good intentions, but his moral compass has become slightly bent. (The saying - The road to Hell is paved with good intentions - comes to mind with this character). When he meets Reya, secrets are revealed and his life will change forever.

This is a fantastic Urban Fantasy that captured my attention from the first page. There have been many books that use the concept of angels or other metaphysical beings (such as the Grim Reaper) as soul gatherer's, but this is the first book I have read that uses human souls called Redeemers to do the reaping. This is a good thing, because it gives the story a fresh twist. It's a dirty job, but someone has got to do it I suppose, and Reya is a strong, independent and resourceful woman. The story is a thrilling mix of suspense, mystery, romance and danger that takes the reader on a roller coaster ride with a metaphysical twist. The characters come alive on the page; I even like Orson, Reya's supervisor and contact with Heaven, even though his attitude bugs Reya no end. Surt is a character that I think was not as threatening as he could have been. Although power hungry, he didn't send shivers down my back as a truly evil being would have done. Nevertheless, his dark presence gave the story enough of a threat factor to keep it interesting. The Hellraiders were more scary though!
The author's use of dimensions to describe the evolution of enlightenment and peace, and the role they play in the state of things made sense to me, but may not to other readers. I think that the Earth is alive and evolving, just as we are, and has a soul too; it is no wonder that she takes exception to being used and exploited by us! The ending is bittersweet in some respects, but it is mostly a reminder that love is the biggest healer of all.

C.J. Barry has written a fabulous story that was fast paced, flowed beautifully and kept me entertained. I am looking forward to reading more books by this author in the future.

I highly recommend this book if you love Paranormal Romance or Urban Fantasy genres. - Lynn Worton

Review:

Fury of Desire (Dragonfury, #4)Fury of Desire by Coreene Callahan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the fourth book in The Dragonfury Series. I loved it!

Wick is a fantastic character! He is a quiet, deadly warrior who even intimidates his fellow brothers-in-arms. He is extremely intense and private, and has an aversion to being touched. However, his tough exterior hides a vulnerable and scarred young boy, who has faced untold terrors as a slave. I liked this intense man when I was first introduced to him in Fury of Fire, but I am glad he has had an opportunity to have his story told and for me to get to know him better.

Jamison Jordan Solares (J.J. for short) is the younger sister to Tania. She is a wonderful character, who has not had the most auspicious dealings with men; she is serving her sentence for killing her abusive ex after all. She too has trust issues, but when she meets Wick, she realises that the taciturn warrior is worth the risk. I liked meeting J.J., because she is the light to Wick's dark.

I have become totally addicted to this series! This is another book that I have purchased the audio copy of, so that I could listen to the story as I went about the household chores. I was completely hooked from the first sentence! The story is very similar to the other three previous books, but the Dragonfury pack is filled with interesting characters with complex individual issues and problems, so each story has something new for the reader to experience. The leader of the Razorback's, Ivar, is still experimenting, but now with the help of Hamersveld, a rogue water dragon, his experiment takes on an even more deadly twist. I am NOT looking forward to finding out the results! There are new characters to meet, and shocking twists and new developments for my beloved dragons to deal with. The introduction of Azrad into the mix has given this story a slight comic twist, even though the author didn't mean to. I liked the scene with Azrad and J.J. and the trip to the nurse's station. It tickled me! I was grinning, even though I know that it was rather serious, even potentially dangerous. However, I could imagine it quite clearly! The way the author described the scene made me wonder if she had had a similar experience at one time.
In fact, the whole book (and series) is highly detailed, and every fight and every intimate moment is described in such a way that it comes alive. Benjamin L. Darcie did another amazing job reading/narrating the story. His voice and reading pace was rather mesmerizing, which helped me "see" the scenes with ease! I may have to search for more of the books this man has narrated (if any)!
I am now looking forward to reading/listening to the next book in the series as soon as it is released!

Coreene Callahan has written another fantastic paranormal romance. She is fast becoming one of my favourite authors to read. Her books are fast paced, exciting and extremely addictive! I still have an issue with the f-bombs used, but I have come to realise that these characters are what they are, and I wouldn't change them at all.

Due to the use of bad language and the explicit sexual scenes, I do not recommend this book for younger readers. However, I highly recommend this book if you love erotic paranormal romances or books with sexy dragon shifters! - Lynn Worton

Review:

The Christmas ProjectThe Christmas Project by Nicola Palmer
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is another fantastic Christmas story for children aged 9+ from this author. I loved it!

Billy Neale is a bright, smart and inquisitive young man. I really liked him a lot. He lives in a village called Trundleford in England, which is normally quite dull and boring, but a mysterious event occurs and Billy is determined to find out the truth. What he finds out will change his life forever!

This is a fabulous story that kept me hooked from the first page! I loved the way the story unfolded. The mystery of the continuous snow, and the whereabouts of Billy's missing Grandad, plus the mysterious Christmas decorations that keep popping up kept me intrigued. Then I met the Bells, Billy's neighbours. They are a strange bunch! They are Noel, Gloria and Joy. Talk about eccentric! I loved meeting them. Their strangeness hides a secret that had me wondering "What if?". I'm not going to say much more, because I don't want to put spoilers in. However, I will say that this book is an adventure from beginning to end!

Nicola Palmer is an author with a vivid imagination. Her characters are likable and very lifelike; her writing style is fast paced, but easy for young readers to follow. She is one of my favourite YA authors, but if she decides to branch out into another genre, I would definitely read her work!

I highly recommend this book for both boys and girls aged 9+ as a stocking filler, or a "just because" book. However, I also recommend this book to adults who love reading the younger YA genre. - Lynn Worton

One Strange ChristmasOne Strange Christmas by Nicola Palmer
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is a fabulous and magical story for children. I loved it!

Jake is a wonderful young boy. At 9 years old, he is a very curious and resourceful person. One day he makes a wish that changes his life.

I downloaded this book last Christmas when it was released, but unfortunately wasn't able to get to read it until now. This is a fantastic story that is extremely humourous and touching. I loved meeting Jake and his family; they are your typical family, with their own peculiarities. However, there is a great mystery afoot, in the form of a suddenly appearing snow globe, and street full of blue snow. The mystery only deepens when an elf called Eric comes to the house, with an invitation that Jake cannot refuse.
This is a charming Christmas tale that had me giggling, and made me feel all warm and fuzzy. I loved meeting all the characters, especially Sid, the snowman, who's wish for a tangerine for a nose instead of a carrot had me grinning. Not to mention Santa! The mystery of the blue snow is solved in jaw dropping fashion, and Santa has a proposition for Jake that is totally mind-blowing! I was completely envious of Jake, and wonder if he will be visiting Santa again this coming Christmas!

Nicola Palmer has written a fantastic Christmas story that is extremely entertaining, and will keep young readers hooked from the first page! I love this authors writing style, which is fast paced, but easy enough for young readers to follow. I love her Alice Parker series too, and I am looking forward to reading more books by this author in the future.

I highly recommend this book for both boys and girls aged 9+ as either a stocking filler, or as a "just because" gift. However, I also recommend this book to adults who love the YA genre, or who are young at heart. - Lynn Worton

Book Review of Fury of Seduction (Dragonfury Series #3) by Coreene Callahan

It is an impossible choice. And yet a sacrifice must be made…

Review:

Fury of Seduction (Dragonfury, #3)Fury of Seduction by Coreene Callahan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the third book in the Dragonfury Series. I loved it!

Mac McCord is the newest member of the Dragonfury pack. An ex-cop, his transformation began in Fury of Ice, after tangling with the magical blast of a Razorback. I liked this tough character. He is almost like an unsteady pup (albeit a dangerous one!) as he adjusts to his new life. He is a rare water dragon, but being new, his magic is raw and untrained, which chafes at this warrior's pride.

Tania Solares is a landscape designer, and best friend to Myst Munroe. I liked her "take no prisoners" attitude with trying to find out about the disappearance of her friend, but her feisty nature puts her on the Razorbacks' radar.

I don't know what magic these sexy dragons have over me, but these books seem to be getting better and better! The story is completely page turning! I must admit that I had to get this in audio too, because I just HAD to know how things were unfolding, especially when I had to do chores and couldn't read my Kindle whilst doing them! Mind you, it could be the narrators voice that got me too! Benjamin L. Darcie's dulcet tones brought the characters to life! It was nice to meet all the characters again, and to be introduced to new ones like Tania's sister, JJ. Although, there is one character that I could have done without - Ivar. The leader of the Razorback's is a cruel psycho, with a mad scientist vibe that made shivers run up my back!
We are also introduced to Nian, a dragon in the Archguard's High Council. He is new to his position, but disgusted with the current leader of the Council, and is looking to replace him. His story could be rather intriguing!
This story is full of action, danger and romance that has captured my imagination, and made me wish that these dragon warriors were really alive! The battle scenes were described extremely vividly and I could "see" them with ease! I cannot wait to read Fury of Desire and to get to know Wick and JJ better!

Coreene Callahan has written another fantastic paranormal romance. She is fast becoming one of my favourite authors to read. Her books are fast paced and flowed beautifully!

Due to the use of bad language and the explicit sexual scenes, I do not recommend this book for younger readers. However, I highly recommend this book if you love erotic paranormal romances or books with sexy dragon shifters! - Lynn Worton

Book Review of Sea-Change by P.W. Fox

Synopsis:

In this fantasy novella, a young bride-to-be, betrayed by her fiance, escapes her captors and makes use of ancestral lore to change her dismal fate and seek revenge. By invoking the ancient powers, she becomes, in fact, the son her father never had. But she has only two weeks, until the time of the new moon, to get back to her home country and confront her betrayer before the spell ends and she becomes a woman again.

Review:

Sea-ChangeSea-Change by P.W. Fox
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

This is a short fantasy novella.

Selena is the daughter of the Duke of Benfield. She is a young woman with a knowledge of witchcraft, but she has also been trained in the art of weaponry.

I am not sure if I liked this character, as this novella was too short to get to know her very well. However, I can understand why she would go to such lengths to exact revenge. Nevertheless, I completely disagree with vigilante bent of her temper; although, I did snigger at the creative way she went about it.
The change from feminine to male point of view was a bit confusing, and I struggled to wrap my head around the pronouns. That being said, the writing was quite inventive, and the story was very entertaining. The ending had me grinning, but I also did feel sorry for Osmund, even though he did deserve his punishment. It's a pity that the spell cannot be used for real today!

P.W. Fox has written an intriguing novella. I enjoyed his writing style, and look forward to reading more of this author's work.

I recommend this novella for lovers of fantasy and paranormal genres, or if you are looking for a quick read between books. - Lynn Worton

The Jewel Box. A gem of a read.

When I started this book I was a bit nervous about the setting and the implication of where the story started for the general theme of the book! Turns out I was both correct and wrong. The book starts out in a top-less bar but it is in no way an erotic story. Frankly it has no scenes in it that might offend. So this fear was negated. I was however correct in the setting becoming a theme although the theme was one of hope, love and bumpy starts true to real life.

The characters are mostly well formed and the reader gets to know the true nature of the main character by her interactions with other characters. I loved this since never do the author assume I should love her characters because she does. In the end you get to know a person not a book character.

So why only a 3* rating? For I know talent when I see it and I look forward to see this talent grow and explore more! I will be waiting to applaud all new offers with higher star ratings and even more respect!

Book Review of Ysmirao & The Pearl of Time; Amelia Maylock #3 (Amelia Maylock books) by Jason Ellis

Synopsis:

The highly anticipated third book in the Amelia Maylock series. -

They all started walking up the bank and used the tree trunks as cover,
concealing themselves in the shadows when they moved, silently. It was a needed skill too as Maratlus had guards on patrol near the metal entrances to the caves. Some were creatures that Amelia recognised from her training with the old hag - when she created attackers for Amelia to overcome, safely - and others were large, muscular people. The creatures were called hybrids because Erryaz had used her evil magic to create many drones, for uses such as this. The creatures here looked like humans cross bred with dogs or wolves. They stood upright on two legs, yet were covered in fur and had a long snout and extremely sharp teeth. They were all heavily armed and simply stood on watch, turning their heads left and right in a monotonous rhythm.

Review:

Ysmirao and the Pearl of Time (Amelia Maylock, #3)Ysmirao and the Pearl of Time by Jason Ellis
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the third book in the Amelia Maylock series for young adults (age range 9 to 14). I absolutely loved it!

Amelia Maylock is a fantastic character. Her powers are growing and she is growing in confidence too. I thoroughly enjoyed watching her trying to live as a normal teenager whilst fighting the Maratlus and her evil twin sister, Erryaz. It's not easy - I am a bit in awe of her!

This story carries on from the end of the second book. I was completely hooked from the first page. The mystery surrounding the "friendly voice" that Amelia hears has been revealed to a point (his name is still a mystery), and Anin, Ferul, Ral are still in a state of stasis. However, all that is about to change when danger threatens. Erryaz is still trying to find the missing gems, and Amelia is in a race to find them before she does. There are a few new dimensions to travel to, and new friends and foes to meet. There are also a few twists and turns that surprised me. One of them being the appearance of Ysmirao and her gift to Amelia. I would love to be given that gift! Unfortunately, there is also a traitor in their midst, and Amelia and the gang have to find out who it is.
This story has a blend of fantasy, magic and reality that will appeal to young readers and keep them entertained. I am now looking forward to reading the next book in the series to find out what happens next!

Jason Ellis has written an exciting YA fantasy/adventure series that will keep youngsters hooked from the first page! I love his writing style, which is fast paced and flows beautifully. This author is on my Favourite Authors list.

I highly recommend this book (and series) to not only boys and girls aged between 9 to 14, but to adults who love the younger YA genre. - Lynn Worton

Mohawk Moon (Mohawk, #1)Mohawk Moon by N. Kuhn
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

This was an intriguing novella that I enjoyed.

Janelle is a very strong character to say that she has had an abusive childhood. She is now a police detective, but has not been home for ten years. When her mother is murdered, she comes home to track down the killer. I really liked this character. She is feisty and totally focused on finding her mother's killer, but a sexy stranger could be a fly in the ointment!

Damien is a man with a shaman-like ability to have visions. His visions send him looking for Janelle. Once they meet, sparks fly! I really like this character. He is a very honourable man. It doesn't hurt that he's uber sexy!

This is a novella that I struggled to put down. Told from both Janelle's and Damien's point of view, I was quickly hooked into the story. Unfortunately, this book is a little rough around the edges, and needs a good editor to go through it and correct some of the more glaring errors. However, that being said, the plot line kept me interested enough to keep going. There are twists and surprises that I didn't see coming. I was a bit surprised at Janelle's reaction to her father, but I could understand it, even as I disagreed with it. The ending has a bit of a cliffhanger that made me want to read the next book in the series.

N. Kuhn has written a book that is a diamond in the rough, hence my 3* review; I would have loved to give this book a higher mark. With a little bit of a polish, this book could shine brightly! Her characters are lifelike and likable. I will definitely be following her career with interest.

Although there are some scenes of a sexual nature, they are not too explicit or erotic. I recommend this book if you love paranormal romance mixed with mystery and suspense. - Lynn Worton

Suicide is selfish.
It tells the world that you are weak. It tells the world your family and friends have failed. It leaves them with guilt that they could have done more but didn't. It tells them they are clueless and helpless.
I am weak, but I am not selfish.
My suicide will not leave my family and friends with guilt and shame; it will leave them thankful that they knew me for the short time I was here.
- Cosette Hugo
Her brother died. Her parents divorced. Her high school bully is relentless. Cosette doesn't have a lot to live for, but it isn't until she accidentally kills someone that Cosette makes the decision to take her own life.
Unwilling to bring shame to her mom, best friend Mattie, or her boyfriend Chris, Cosette decides the best method of suicide is to become a victim of the local serial killer, The Poser. But every time she goes out to find him she gets attacked; her instincts take over, and she ends up killing her attackers. This quickly leads to unbearable guilt. Desperate to finish this before she gets caught or racks up more victims, Cosette does the unthinkable.
"And when I reach my final goal, to meet my brother in heaven, and we're looking down at my victim in Hell, he will say to me 'Well done, Cosette. What a Beautiful Suicide.'"

“No, I just want to apologize.” He loosely holds my hand and walks me to my couch. “I crossed a line I said I wouldn’t and you warned me. You know enough about me to know that I’m no boy scout. But I want you to know that I know enough about you that I think I should stop asking questions.”
I hate what he’s saying to me, but before I get mad at him, he holds up a finger. “I have something for you.”
“Do I want it?”
“Actually, I have two things, and yes, you’ll want one and need the other.” He holds his fist out. I put my hand underneath, waiting to catch whatever he drops. “This I stole, because that’s just what I do, but it doesn’t make it any less meaningful, okay?”
“Okay.” I grin at his cute introduction.
“If you’ve changed your mind about committing to me, then let me know now before I open my hand and look stupid.”
“You saw me completely naked. I think that’s commitment enough.”
“Very true, good answer.” He opens his hand and drops a small ring with two diamonds separated by a deep blue sapphire. “This is a promise ring. It’s not an engagement ring or anything like that. It’s just me pledging myself to you. If you accept me, then accept the ring. If you aren't sure, then don’t take it. I know it’s old fashioned, but I’m an old fashioned kind of guy.”
“I’ll take it and I’ll take you.” He slides it on my finger while I cry. I lunge at him and kiss him. He smiles and kisses me back.
He’s perfect, just perfect.
I wish I could be like him, so loving, and thoughtful, and kind—but I’m not. I knew when I started that I would not be good for Chris. Shit, I’m on a suicide mission and here he wants to pledge himself to me.
“Chris, I can’t take this.”
“What? Rejection already?”
I pull away from him, feeling the vacuuming black hole sucking onto me, letting me know it’s there waiting for me. “I’m not good enough for you, Chris. I can’t take you down with me.”
“What do you mean down with you? Cosette, I’ll go anywhere with you. You’re perfect for me.”
“The Cozy you know is not the real me. You are pledging yourself to my body, not my soul.”
“I don’t understand. You said you loved me.” His voice cracks, breaking my heart.
“Oh my God, I do! But my soul is dying. It started dying a long time ago and keeps dying the more I cross these lines. It’s not fair for me to offer you something that isn't perfect. I can’t take this from you. I’m not worthy.” I take the ring off and hand it back to him.
He stares at it, confused. “Did I happen to mention that this was stolen?”
I chuckle through tears.

Image of Atty EveI was born and raised in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Family life was rough with a religious mother and a short-tempered, alcoholic father. (Picture Archie Bunker) My escape was reading and music. I think I was the only kid with my nose in a book during the Air Force Academy football games.
As a teen I was an 80's new waver with black shaved hair, a pale face and bright red lipstick. I was very self-destructive and always got into trouble. Needing a change I followed my father's footsteps and joined the Air Force.
During my four year enlistment I was stationed at Nellis AFB in Las Vegas, Nevada where I met my wonderful husband. We both got out of the military and moved to Southern Indiana, on the outskirts of Louisville, Kentucky. I have two teenage boys whom I try to embarrass but have yet to succeed, they have great senses of humor.
I wrote my first novel over ten years ago and was on the verge of having it published when, sadly, my publisher passed away. I shelved my books for a few years to work on our family business. Now I'm back to writing and have decided my fate is in my own hands. And since I hate being told what to do I am self-publishing.

Review:

Deathless (The Blue Fire Saga, #2)Deathless by Scott Prussing
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the second book in The Blue Fire Saga. I loved it!

Leesa Nyland is a fascinating character. She is a typical teen, except for the fact that her mother was bitten by a one fanged vampire whilst carrying her. She is a feisty woman, who has faced danger and won. However, she is about to face an even greater challenge. I really liked this character. She is reckless at times, but it is her loyalty, bravery and love for her friends and family that makes this character stand out for me.

I have been meaning to read this book for some time; It has been sat on my Kindle, staring at me since April last year. I finally managed to get to it, and realised that I am a total idiot for not reading it sooner! I was quickly swept up in the story and carried away by the descriptions and the characters.
I enjoyed meeting Rave, Leesa's volkaane (vampire hunting) boyfriend, again. He is still trying to learn how to control his fire, so that he and Leesa can kiss for longer than a few seconds without killing her. This is quite challenging, but he obviously loves Leesa and will do anything to protect her. The story is told from mostly Leesa's point of view, but there are some other characters that have their say, namely Rave, Edwina and Stefan. Edwina is still sore from losing her feeder (Leesa's brother, Bradley), and wants revenge. Will she get it? We are also introduced to a new character called Dominic, who also has his say. This man has more than his fair share of secrets, and I was a bit unsure of him at first. However, as the story progressed, I began to like him. There are several twists in this story that kept me hooked; one of them being the zombies in Leesa's visions/dreams. What were their purpose? This question was buzzing around my head for a while, and when the answer was revealed, a shiver went up my spine! When her dreams become a reality, Leesa is thrown into a war of magical proportions! There is action, danger, magic and romance aplenty in this book, and I am most definitely looking forward to reading the next book in the series, Helpless, in the not too distant future!

Scott Prussing has written a fantastic YA Paranormal Romance! I love his writing style, which is fast paced but not rushed. I also love the way the story flows from scene to scene. His descriptive words brought the characters to life. I am adding him to my favourite author's list.

As there is no swearing or any scenes of a sexual nature beyond kissing (so far), I recommend this book (and series) to teens aged 15+. However, I also highly recommend this book (and series) if you love YA, Paranormal Romances or Action/Adventure genres. - Lynn Worton

Blurb

As the Romance Writers of Great Britain gather for their annual conference in a London hotel, an American tourist is founded murdered nearby. Emily Castles teams up with eccentric philosophy professor Dr. Muriel to investigate.

This entertaining British mystery is the debut novel in a new series featuring twenty-six-year-old amateur sleuth Emily Castles.

My review

Romance Writers of Great Britain is convening in a hotel.  With a cast of characters as diverse and eclectic like the setting itself it becomes the scene of a murder.  Is this the only murder? Other questions arise regarding the murder most foul…who and why were the poor woman murdered?
Emily, an assistant at the event soon finds herself in the role of sleuth.
I really love the way that the author plays with words use satire to make a sub culture into a force to be reckoned with.  It occurred to be during the listen of this audio book that a sub culture is only a subculture until it becomes a persons' life.  It then becomes mainstream and in this story I was constantly reminded of the Indie communities struggle against main published groups since even though these are not Indie authors…the implications of authors needing reviews desperately, the bloggers fights.  The One Star club etc had me in fits of laughter since I come across these almost daily in my own subculture.  I think the true appeal of this book will be towards others like me who live and love a subculture.
As to the sleuth part; Emily is a really fun character who makes notes and ponders over the weirdest and mostly too literal interpretation of statements by police and possible subjects.

The narrator, Alison Larkin did a splendid job with accents and change of voice and pitch to denote the characters to make all of them as individual as their characters needs be.  I think the narrator truly added to the story.
I am also glad that the book did not have any sound effects to accompany it.  Although these many times add to the story line, in this particular story where the emphasis is on satire as much as a love of word, I believe it would have distracted.

All in all a 4 * read and listen.
