Tegen Punishment by Inge-Lise Goss

Tegen Punishment, book three in the Tegens series by Inge-Lise Goss.

This last book left me with a bitter sweet feeling, on the one hand I am sad because I figure the series is done now and I have grown to love the books.  On the other hand it really knitted up the story line very nicely.

This book is action packed.  It is a mystery, a paranormal story, a page turner.  In the end little is left to do but to sit back and get lost in a story that plays off in front of the reader’s eye.

I must admit, book one left me shaky. I am not exactly a spider friendly person. And book one was all about spiders.  By book three, still spider filled I got lost in this world and the spiders formed the perfect catalyst for so many things that went on.

A really good read.  Not gender specific since the bit of romance should satisfy the female readers and the males should love the action scenes which are all very well thought through and expertly executed.

IT

IT and the 4DX experience at Nu Metro, Menlyn Park.

After I went to watch the movie I started to do some light research.  This is what Wiki has to say over what exactly 4DX means.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4D.

To watch the trailer …. click on the pic and it will take you right to it.

My opinion.

This is a must do experience.  A bit pricey but not out of the ball park.  The movie IT was for me, my friends and quite a few others in the theatre the BEST comedy of the year thus far, even with the 4DX experience it was far more funny than scary.  That would mean that I would rate the movie low but for me it was such a fun time that it gets 5 stars.

The effects got to be a bit much after the first hour and a half.  The chair, mist etc. was fine but the deep heat smell of it every few minutes gave me hay fever and I could do with less of it.
For some reason our cinema did not have air con on and after the first hour we all started to pray for the breeze to blow through our hair.  By the second hour it got really hot.

As for getting your money’s worth with the effects.  The movie. The service and the popcorn package with goodies advertising the 4DX experience here is my rating

Movie –IT
5*****
4DX – Experience
4***** but that should be a 4.4 rating because were it not for the hay fever I might not have gotten so annoyed with the spray.

Having fun, making memories is truly priceless.  I do not think this is something everybody will fall in love with but I do think everybody should try and experience it at least once so they can make up their own minds over its immersive experience in relation to their own preferences.

As for the movie.  Going in I was forewarned that IT himself is the show stopper of this movie.  And I tried to focus on the actors brilliant ability to make this monster, our monster.

For a while it worked.  Then I got so into the movie that I no longer even considered IT to be anything other that IT.  No normal man for me under that makeup.  Makeup? What makeup?

But the show was stolen by ...
Sophia Lillis for her perfect portrayal of a girl on the cusp of womanhood still kid, part woman, totally unsure as to where she fits in.

The second show stopper was...
Finn Wolfhard.  He is a comedic genius and had us in stitches.

So IT ends with the words.... Chapter one and here is a link to a magazine article talking about Chapter two ... click on the blu purple two to read more of the article in Cosmopolitan.

Review:

Tegen Punishment (Tegens Book 3)Tegen Punishment by Inge-Lise Goss
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the third book in the Tegens series. I really enjoyed it.

Sara Jones is a wonderful character. When I first met her in The Tegen Cave I wanted to shake some sense into her. I feel that she has grown and adjusted well into her new life as a Tegen as the series has gone on. I love watching characters grow and mature.

It has been two years since I read the second book. Nevertheless, I easily slipped back into the tale. This story continues from the previous book and sees Sara facing disciplinary action for helping Wendy. However, her punishment is slightly unusual. She finds herself going undercover to locate a rogue Tegen hiding in a religious compound. She will need to keep her wits about her as the danger mounts.

I started this story and was hooked from the first page and didn't put it down until I'd finished it. So why the 4 stars? There were some things about the story that bugged me (no pun intended) even though I can't put my finger on the exact reasons why. I think it may have been my mood at the time of reading or the time difference between reading book 2 and this one that may have influenced me. It is told through the eyes of Sara and the reader is taken on a roller coaster ride of action, adventure, mystery and danger. I love the way the story unfolds. There are some interesting characters introduced, such as Alex Newark and the renegade Snyder. Kendall makes another appearance. He is a Tegen enforcer and is quite mysterious. He still sends shivers down my spine. The heat between Conner and Sara is still explosive, though there is not as much intimacy in this book compared to the first one, although there are a few clandestine meetings (not explicit but implied).

One thing I will say about this book is that the story is wonderfully written. The characters are lifelike and the storyline gripping. I reached the end of the book with mixed feelings. Although it doesn't end in a cliffhanger, the author has left me with the feeling that there could potentially be another book due to the ambiguous ending. Now I can't wait to find out what is in store for Sara in the next book.

Inge-Lise Goss has written an intriguing horror full of mystery and suspense. I love her writing style, which is fast paced, and the flow was wonderful. I am curious to see what this author comes up with in the future.

I do not recommend this book to younger readers due to some violence and to readers who have arachnophobia or have a nervous disposition. However, I highly recommend this book if you love horror/suspense genres. - Lynn Worton

I have so many passions these days...

#Crochet #Gift

So, wondered why I drop by so very, very infrequently these days? Have I given up on reading? No way! But I find more and more passions in life to keep me busy ...

Here is one.  A gift to Angie Edwards for her birthday this past Saturday.
Angie, for those who do not know her is also an avid reader and what apart from coffee, a bed and a book makes our little hearts sing? Why a blanky naturally.

Yes it is Angie holding up her present.

Need advice on crochet? Google really is your friend.  I used to be able to crochet when I was young and pretty but I lost that ability with the looks and the youth and had to start from scratch.  Pretty aint it?

Fifty Shades Darker by E L James

Somehow I never figured I would do this one.... who knew?

3 stars for this one, since I gave book one a 1 star 'cause they picked on me and would not let me give it 0 I am upping this with a star to make sure you understand that this is really FAR better than book one.

My review.

Book 2

It pains me to say this but this was a far better book than the first.  The same issues is still present but if you squint, turn your head a few degrees to the side and read it thus, then it almost have a real plot.  Although the planning and execution of said plot is grating it is by far better than book one.  Oh and for a well-educated man, worth millions his use of the term of endearment “Oh baby” in every second sentence drove me to tears.  But still… it is an entertaining read and as I said, much better than book one.

Blurb

Daunted by the singular sexual tastes and dark secrets of the beautiful, tormented young entrepreneur Christian Grey, Anastasia Steele has broken off their relationship to start a new career with a Seattle publishing house. But desire for Christian still dominates her every waking thought, and when he proposes a new arrangement, Anastasia cannot resist. They rekindle their searing sensual affair, and Anastasia learns more about the harrowing past of her damaged, driven, and demanding Fifty Shades. While Christian wrestles with his inner demons, Anastasia must confront her anger and envy of the women who came before her and make the most important decision of her life. Erotic, sparkling and suspenseful, Fifty Shades Darker is the irresistibly addictive second part of the Fifty Shades trilogy.

Review:

Zombie BakerZombie Baker by J.S. Rumble
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is a charming children's chapter book. I loved it!

Fred is a fantastic character. I really liked him. He is a kind and loving boy (not sure of exact age but think around eleven or twelve). He also loves to bake and dreams of owning his own bakery one day. Unfortunately, he has to deal with school bullies.

This story is told in a memoir style through Fred's eyes and takes the reader on a journey of discovery. Fred may be a zombie, but he has the same emotions as the rest of us. He gets excited, happy, sad, angry and frustrated by most of the same situations as ordinary humans.

This book is ideal for children with short attention spans as it's only 66 pages long. This story tackles the issue of bullying and shows that it's okay to be different, and with hard work you can attain your dream (whatever it may be). There are some interesting characters introduced and I really liked Fred's friends, Ervin, James and Ben, as they stand by him even though he's different to them. They like him just the way he is. I did feel sorry for Ervin during one scene though. He had to trust Fred even though he was terrified, but it made me like him even more and wish he was my friend too. There is action and adventure, with enough excitement to keep a young reader's attention. I love baking too, so reading about the cake Fred baked made my mouth water. So much so that I ended up baking a cake for myself later. I must admit that I would have loved if the story was longer, but then it wouldn't be a chapter book. Nevertheless, I was sad to reach the end even though it ended satisfactorily.

J.S. Rumble has written an entertaining chapter book that I thoroughly enjoyed. I love her writing style, which is not particularly fast paced though easy enough for children to follow whether reading on their own, or being read to by their parents. The flow is wonderful too. This is the second book I've read by this author and I would definitely consider reading more of her books in the future.

I highly recommend this chapter book to young children aged 5-10, and to adults looking for a chapter book to keep their little ones entertained. - Lynn Worton

Review 4.5 rounded up to 5*

This is an intriguing crime thriller set in London, England. I loved it!

Rumer is a fascinating character. I found myself not only liking her, but also feeling sorry for her, though I also wanted to shake her at times too. She is nineteen years old, but seems more mature. This is due to her upbringing I think. She has grown up in foster care, knowing that her mother was a notorious assassin. Unfortunately, she believes herself to be cursed as everyone she comes to care for dies in the most terrible ways. Working for a private detective as a shadow (someone who follows, watches and listens to garner information), she is thrown into a life and death struggle when a mobster turns his attention in her direction seeking an occult relic last known to be in the possession of her mother, who died several years previously.

Having previously read the author's YA work, when I was contacted about reading this book, I instantly accepted. Although not YA, this is an intriguing crime thriller that instantly caught my attention when I read the synopsis. Knowing that I would also be taken on an amazing journey was a bonus.

I started reading and didn't put the book down until I'd completed it. The story is told through Rumer's eyes. I found myself fascinated with Rumer and her life. I cannot imagine how knowing that you are the progeny of a criminal/assassin (even if deceased) would affect your life. Rumer emotionally distances herself from everyone in the hope that she will not 'kill' like her mother. She carries around a huge burden of guilt for things that she has no control over too. Understandable in some ways, annoying in others hence my desire to shake her at times.

There are several interesting characters introduced. Rumer's employer is Julian Hart and runs Hart Detective Agency, but he is only in a few scenes so didn't really get a feel for this character. Reverend Mara is the name of the mobster who is after Rumer and I found him to be a strange character. He is obsessed with locating an occult weapon called the Crook Spear. Then there is Bolt, an ex-policeman who befriends Rumer. I would have liked to have gotten to know him a lot more as there seems to be some chemistry between him and Rumer and would have liked for the author to have explored this a bit more. There are also a few other characters introduced, like George for instance and someone thought to be long dead.

Killing Rumer is a pulse pounding read full of action, danger, violence and potential romance. There are several twists and turns that surprised me and I found myself on an emotional roller coaster ride from beginning to end. I did find some scenes disturbing, particularly the one containing George and I shed a couple of tears for not only him, but Rumer too.
The occult weapon with the weird name is not what I thought it would be. However, so as not to spoil it, I will not say what kind of weapon it is. I will say that when it was disclosed I was completely thrown; I had a completely different weapon in mind. The end of the story sent chills up my spine. There could potentially be a sequel as it finishes ambiguously and ominously.

Joshua Winning has written an intriguing crime thriller with a kick-ass heroine. I love his fast paced writing style, and the story flowed beautifully. He is one of only a handful of male authors who I have added to my favourite authors list and I can't wait to see what he will come up with in the future.

Due to the nature of the story (danger, violence, bloodshed), I do not recommend this book to young readers or those of a nervous disposition. I do, however, highly recommend this book if you love crime thrillers with kick-ass heroines. - Lynn Worton

About The Author:

Joshua Winning was born in Cambridge, but don't hold that against him. He's attempted to escape reality for most of his life by writing. As a child, that involved poring diligently over anything by C.S. Lewis or Robin Jarvis.

When he's not writing about Sentinels, Joshua can usually be found watching Buffy The Vampire Slayer, The Wire and Daria. He also works as a freelance journalist, writing about movies for Total Film, Little White Lies and movieScope.

Joshua currently lives in North London with his cat Mia. Unfortunately, she's not a great conversationalist, but he's working on it.
