Book Review of Esher (Guardians of Hades Romance Series Book 3) by Felicity Heaton

Book Title: Esher (Guardians Of Hades #3)
Genre: Erotic Paranormal Romance
Pages: 310
Author: Felicity Heaton
Date Published: 24 March 2018

Synopsis:

Prince of the Underworld and Lord of Water, Esher was banished from his home by his father, Hades, two centuries ago and given a new duty and purpose—to keep our world and his from colliding in a calamity foreseen by the Moirai.

Together with his six brothers, he fights to defend the gates to the Underworld from daemons bent on breaching them and gaining entrance to that forbidden land, striving to protect his home from their dark influence. Tormented by his past, Esher burns with hatred towards mortals and bears a grudge against Hades for forcing him into their world, condemning him to a life of battling to keep a fragile hold on his darker side—a side that wants to kill every human in the name of revenge.

Until he finds himself stepping in to save a female—a beautiful mortal filled with light and laughter who draws him to her as fiercely as the pull of the moon, stirring conflict in his heart and rousing dangerous needs long forgotten.

Aiko knows from the moment she sets eyes on the black-haired warrior that he is no ordinary man, just as she’s no ordinary woman. Blessed with a gift, she can see through his stormy façade to the powerful god beneath, and the pain and darkness that beats inside him—pain she grows determined to heal as she falls deeper under his spell and into his world.

When the daemon bent on turning Esher against his brothers makes her move, will Esher find the strength to overcome his past and fulfil his duty, or will the lure of revenge allow the darkness in his heart to seize control, transforming him into a god intent on destroying the world?

Review:

Esher (Guardians of Hades Romance Series Book 3)Esher by Felicity Heaton
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the third book in the Guardians of Hades series. I loved it!

Esher is a wonderful character. I love a tortured soul and Esher fits this mould easily. He is the middle child of seven siblings born to Hades and Persephone, and has power over water. Banished by his father to live in the mortal realm to guard the gates to the Underworld, Esher lives in Tokyo with one of his brothers. Due to an event in his past he struggles with his dark impulses to hurt the humans in his city, so he avoids them when he can or tries to ignore them when he can't. When he impulsively helps a damsel in distress, he finds himself captivated by her gentle soul. However, danger abounds. Will he be able to curb his dark impulses, or will he end up hurting the ones he loves?

Aiko is also a wonderful character. I liked her a lot. She is a gentle and loving woman with a huge heart, and the ability to see and speak to spirits. When she meets Esher she realises that he's not entirely human, but she is drawn to him and as she gets to know him, she begins to fall for him. As danger threatens to tear them apart, she finds herself targeted as a pawn in a dangerous game played by a mysterious opponent.

I love reading the Eternal Mates series, but this new series may give it a run for it's money. This story takes the reader on an emotional roller coaster from beginning to end. I started to read this story and didn't put it down until I'd finished it. I loved meeting the brothers again after almost a year since the previous book (Valen) was released. I love the little details the author has included, like Valen and Ares losing bets with their significant others and the forfeits they had to deal with. It made me giggle. They are obviously in love and complete saps to boot.

In this story, we get to meet Hades and Persephone in the Underworld, though it's not entirely a happy affair. But, this leads to an event that... Ugh! This would be a spoiler, so going to stop there. Nevertheless, I found myself shedding tears a few times in this story, so recommend you keep a tissue handy (just in case). There are new villains you will love to hate including a Valkyrie, but there is also a mysterious woman mentioned who seems to be the mastermind behind the plot to turn the world into the Otherworld that the three Fates or Moirai had warned about, but we (the readers) will have to wait for the next books in the series to find out who this person is. As I reached the end of the book, I found myself becoming even more excited for what is to come. I am now looking forward to reading Marek's story as soon as I can.

Felicity Heaton has written another fast paced, sexy paranormal romance that I thoroughly enjoyed. I love her fast paced writing style, which flows effortlessly from scene to scene. She is on top of my favourite author's list.

Each book of this series could be read as a stand-alone, as this one does not end in a cliffhanger, though I would recommend reading them in order. I do not recommend this book to younger readers due to the extremely HOT and explicit sexual scenes. However, I highly recommend this book (and series) if you love sexy paranormal romances full of gods and daemons. - Lynn Worton

Blood MinesBlood Mines by Lynelle Clark
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Review 3.5 rounded up to 4*

This is an intriguing post-apocalyptic thriller set in South Africa. I enjoyed it.

Tanya is an interesting character, though I found her to be a bit annoying to be honest, and too trusting to boot, to say that she lived in a virtual war zone (even though there isn't a war as such). She and her son Steve live on a plot of land that is threatened by the acid water that has polluted the land when an earthquake devastated the area around Gauteng thirty years previously. They eke out an existence, but they are living on borrowed time. When she and her son are attacked by renegades and left for dead, she finds herself facing her deepest fear and unknown dangers as she races to find a solution to the poison in the ground.

This story has an interesting and potentially realistic premise. The region of Gauteng in South Africa is heavily mined, with the threat of earthquakes due to the depths of said mines. The author has taken this fact and written a post-apocalyptic nightmare. I found myself completely hooked for most of the story. Told through the eyes of Tanya, I did find some of the plot a little far fetched at times; especially some of the scenes when the mutated animals appear, though this did get me wondering if there was some radioactivity going on rather than just cyanide poisoning, or other toxic chemicals causing the mutations. However, this is only my personal opinion. Other readers may not have this response. Another niggle I had with this story was how quickly the main protagonist trusted complete strangers, as well as how quickly the love interest grew between herself and Dirk. I can understand instant attraction, but insta-love? Not so much. Another pet peeve of mine is the use of terms of endearment like sweetie, honey, or love (and many others) in a derogatory way. I don't know if this is what the author intended when she wrote the story, but I found these terms to be degrading and made me want to punch the characters for using these terms in a sarcastic or patronising way. Maybe it's just a colloquial language difference. Who knows?

Blood Mines is a mixture of danger, horror and romance that kept me riveted from beginning to end. There are some not so nice characters introduced, which made me love to hate them and the descriptive writing made it easy to picture the scenes in my minds eye with ease. I reached the end of the book with mixed feelings. I am not sure if there will be a second book to follow on from this one but I hope so, as, although it doesn't finish on a cliffhanger, there seemed to be some loose ends that were not tied up satisfactorily (in my opinion).

Lynelle Clark is a South African author and this is the first book I have read that has been written by her. I love her fast paced writing style, and the flow was wonderful. There were a couple of proofreading errors (missing punctuation mostly), but this didn't affect my enjoyment of the story. I would consider reading more of this author's books in the future.

Due to scenes of a sexual nature (although not explicit) and some violence, I do not recommend this book to young readers. I do recommend this book if you love post-apocalyptic thrillers/dystopian/horror or science fiction genres. - Lynn Worton

Review:

The Lost Chalice (Relic Seekers, #3)The Lost Chalice by Anita Clenney
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the third book in The Relic Seekers series. I loved it!

Kendall Morgan is a wonderful character. However, I sometimes wanted to shake some sense into her right from the start. She works for a billionaire as a relic finder. She has a special gift that allows her to track down, as well as know things about, the artifacts she procures for her boss. When her boss, Nathan Larraby, asks her to locate four powerful relics, little does she realise the danger she will face or the secrets she will uncover. Nathan's reclusive nemesis known only by the name of Reaper (as in Grim) is also after the artifacts. But Kendall is also fighting her attraction to her co-worker, Jake Stone, and her handsome boss.

This is an urban fantasy romance with a twist. I started reading the story and was instantly hooked. The story is told through the view points of Kendall and Jake for the most part, but as it progressed, other characters, namely Nathan, also has his say.

I found myself on a roller coaster of emotion as the story unfolded. I enjoyed getting to know the characters better and we are introduced to quite a few new ones too.

The story continues from the end of book two and the reader gets to delve deeper into the Protettori and how and when it was established. This means that we also get to find out more about the Guardian, Raphael, and Marco, the keeper of the relics for the Protettori. We also get to know a little more about the Reaper and his relationship to not only the Protettori, but to one of the other characters. There are other surprises that are revealed too.

The story is just as exciting as the first two, and the author brings two myths together - that of the fountain of youth and the chalice once used by Jesus before he was crucified. However, I still found myself wondering about the trio's relationship and growth (or lack) of it into a threesome. There is definite chemistry between the three; Jake and Nathan don't find each other attractive so much, but they both have feelings for Kendall. I could see the potential for a threesome, but the author seems to have shied away from committing them to this type of relationship. Yet. I don't know if the author plans on continuing with this series, but I hope she does as it feels unfinished to me. The ending was left a little ambiguous, which made me feel disappointed as well as hopeful. If this series will not have at least another book written to conclude it, then I will be most aggrieved. I really want to go on another adventure with these three, and to see whether their relationship grows further.

Anita Clenney has written an intriguing paranormal romance full of action and adventure. I love her fast paced writing style and the flow is wonderful. I would definitely consider reading more books by this author in the future, and there is a high probability that I would add her to my favourite authors list too.

Due to scenes of a sexual nature (which are not explicit), as well as some violence, I do not recommend this book to young readers. However, I highly recommend this book if you love paranormal/supernatural romances/romantic suspense/urban fantasy/action/adventure or myths and/or legends genres. - Lynn Worton

Book Review of Fountain of Secrets (The Relic Seekers Book 2) by Anita Clenney

Synopsis:

A relics expert with a nose for mystery is torn between her sexy billionaire boss and her hot bodyguard. Each would die to save her...and win her heart.

Kendall Morgan puts her sixth sense back to work in the second book of the Relic Seekers series, divining the history and location of ancient relics. Her boss, the gorgeous billionaire Nathan Larraby, sends her to Italy to safeguard a priceless treasure belonging to the Protettori, an ancient order of monks who guard four powerful relics that Nathan believes may be the cure for his dark curse. He also sends brooding mercenary Jake Stone to watch Kendall’s back—although her back isn’t all Jake has his eye on.

Nathan joins them, and all three tumble into a labyrinth of defenses created by the monks to protect their treasures, including the Fountain of Youth. They find themselves in England on the trail of the legendary King Arthur, who along with the Reaper, seems mysteriously connected to the Protettori. Review:

Fountain Of Secrets (Relic Seekers, #2)Fountain Of Secrets by Anita Clenney
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the second book in The Relic Seekers series. I loved it!

Kendall Morgan is a wonderful character. However, I sometimes wanted to shake some sense into her. She works for a billionaire as a relic finder. She has a special gift that allows her to track down, as well as know things about, the artifacts she procures for her boss. When her boss, Nathan Larraby, hires her to locate four powerful relics, little does she realise the danger she will face. Not just from Nathan's reclusive nemesis known only by the name of Reaper (as in Grim), who is also after the artifacts, but from her attraction to her co-worker, Jake Stone.

I found myself on a roller coaster of emotion as the story unfolded. I enjoyed getting to know the characters better and we are introduced to quite a few new ones.

This story sees the trio thrown into danger as they uncover more secrets from the secretive Protettori, and unravel the secrets hidden in their own pasts. It continues from the end of book one. Jake and Kendall grow closer together and consummate their attraction, and Nathan finds out that the changes he is experiencing is linked to an event in his past. They also uncover a mysterious connection between the Protettori, King Arthur, and the fountain of youth. This sees them travelling from Italy to England in an attempt to find the lost fountain of youth, fabled to give anyone who drinks from it not an immortal life but a longer one. The mystery and suspense kept me reading until I'd finished the book. However, I was a little disappointed that the relationship between the three didn't develop as much as I thought it could have. There is definite chemistry between the three; Jake and Nathan not so much, but they both have feelings for Kendall. I could see the potential for a threesome, but the author seems to have shied away from this aspect. Perhaps they will get together in the third book? I guess I'll just have to read it and see. The book ends in a cliffhanger and I am now looking forward to reading The Lost Chalice as soon as possible.

Anita Clenney has written an intriguing paranormal romance full of action and adventure. I love her fast paced writing style and the flow is wonderful. I would definitely consider reading more books by this author in the future, and there is a high probability that I would add her to my favourite authors list too.

Review:

Said the Spider to the FlySaid the Spider to the Fly by Miss Mae
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is a fantastic murder mystery. I loved it!

Mona Murphy is a wonderful character. I really liked her. She is swept into a mystery when she arrives back in Copper Springs, North Carolina, after the death of her grandfather. She has a special gift that she sees as a curse - she has extra sensitive perception. Notice I said sensitive not extrasensory? This is because it's her hearing that is sensitive and not her having second sight. This ability helps her as she unravels the tangled web of lies and deceit surrounding her. With the help of an insurance investigator, Preston Hitchcock, she finds herself facing innumerable dangers. But can she find the culprit before she becomes the next victim?

This is a far better tale than the short story (The Timekeeper) I read in January from this author. As the title suggests, there is a tangled web woven through this tale, and I was instantly hooked (or should I say trapped?). This story is set in modern times, but I felt it had an old fashioned private detective feel to it, which I loved. The story has a whole bevy of characters; some eccentric, others special, and some downright creepy. However, this allows the author to pepper the story with red herrings so the reader thinks they've got an inkling of who the suspect is, before pulling the rug metaphorically out from under one's feet with another twist. The suspense level is high throughout, so when the culprit is revealed, it's a complete surprise. There was more than one suspect that was high on my list for most of the story. But... Nope, I'll not say more as that would spoil the surprise for the rest of you. What I will say is that I thoroughly enjoyed the roller coaster ride I was taken on during this story and hope the author writes more of these types of stories. She does mysteries so well, so it was a shame that The Timekeeper wasn't up to her usual standard in my opinion. The story wraps up nicely, with no cliffhanger to annoy the reader.

MIss Mae has written a fantastic crime caper that has captured my imagination. Her descriptive writing makes me feel like I am there, observing and living in the story. I love her fast paced writing style, along with the wit and warmth she injects into her characters, which makes them come to life. I also found the flow wonderful. Miss Mae is one of my favourite authors, so will continue to read more of her books in the future.

As there are no scenes of a sexual nature, nor any profanity, younger readers would be fine while reading this story. However, I highly recommend this book to readers who are looking for a classic romantic suspense detective novel with a hint of supernatural in it. - Lynn Worton

This is the first book in The Relic Seekers series. I loved it!

Kendall Morgan is a wonderful character. However, I sometimes wanted to shake some sense into her. She works for a billionaire as a relic finder. She doesn't go to archaeological digs, not since being a child and her father and best friend were killed in a plane crash. However, she has a special gift that allows her to track down, as well as know things about, the artifacts she procures for her boss.

This is an urban fantasy romance with a twist. I read the blurb and was intrigued. I love action adventure mixed in with romance, as well as characters with a hint of supernatural/paranormal gifts, and since I love stories like Indiana Jones, this book seemed to tick those boxes. I am glad I downloaded this book, but am sad that it's taken me a while to get to read this book due to my large reading list.

I started reading the story and was instantly hooked. The story is told through the view points of Kendall and Jake for the most part, but as it progressed, other characters, namely Nathan, also had their say. I don't want to give spoilers, so will try not to.

I found myself on a roller coaster of emotion as the story unfolded. I enjoyed getting to know the characters better and we are introduced to quite a few. Kendall is hard headed, determined and carrying a lot of baggage from her past. Jake, too, is an intriguing character. He is a former soldier, working as a mercenary for hire. He is also carrying a lot of baggage from his past, and has secrets. Speaking of secrets, Nathan Larraby is one big enigma. He has a power that is changing him into something, but his past is hidden so the reader (namely me) became intrigued about him. Fergus is Nathan's butler and is another character that I liked a lot.

There are several twists and turns that act as red herrings, so the reader never really knows what is really going on in this book. I will say that this just kept my interest in this story keen. The castle that Kendall and Jake visit is full of secrets and is steeped in history thought to be legend or myth. If you love Arthurian legends as I do, the way the author wove this aspect into the story got me thinking. What if King Arthur, Guinevere and Lancelot were actually in a threesome? Whether this was true or not is only speculation on my part. We may never know for sure. However, I could imagine Kendall, Jake and Nathan in such a relationship, as there is definite chemistry between the three (Jake and Nathan not so much, but they both have feelings for Kendall). Saying that, there is no explicit scenes of a sexual nature in this story, though there is mention of activity between Kendall and Jake. I'm not keen on a love triangle in most books, but the way these characters interact, whether intended by the author or not, feels natural. The danger they face is palpable, and I found myself biting my nails or sitting on the edge of my seat often. I reached the end of the book with mixed feelings, and was glad that I'd downloaded the second and third book in the series so that I could continue reading, since the book ends in a small cliffhanger. Now I am looking forward to reading Fountain of Secrets as soon as I can.

Anita Clenney has written an intriguing paranormal romance full of action and adventure. I love her fast paced writing style and the flow is wonderful. I would definitely consider reading more books by this author in the future, and there is a high probability that I would add her to my favourite authors list too.

Due to the above mentioned scenes of a sexual nature, as well as some violence, I do not recommend this book to young readers. However, I highly recommend this book if you love paranormal/supernatural romances/romantic suspense/urban fantasy/action/adventure or myths and/or legends genres. - Lynn Worton
