 Author Bio

I have a wonderful, supportive husband and three beautiful children. I enjoy spending time with all of them which normally involves some baseball, shooting hoops, taking walks, watching movies, and of course reading.
My passion for reading began at a very young age and only grew over time. Whether I was bringing home a book from the library, or sneaking one of my mom's romance novels and reading by the light in the hallway when we were supposed to be sleeping, I always had a book.
I read several different genres and subgenres, but Paranormal Romance and Romantic Suspense have always been my favorites. I read anything by Katie Reus, Lora Leigh, J.R. Ward and Rebecca Zanetti.
I have always made up my own stories, and have just recently decided to start sharing them. I hope everyone enjoys reading them as much as I enjoy writing them.

Author: Coreene Callahan
Date Published: 24 February 2015 (E-Book & Audio Book)

Review:

Fury of Obsession (Dragonfury, #5)Fury of Obsession by Coreene Callahan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the fifth book in the Dragon Fury series. I absolutely loved it!

First off, I would like to say that I love the cover! Venom's eyes! *Sigh!*

I downloaded this book in both Kindle and audiobook format, as I have the other books in the series in this way too. This gives me the opportunity to either read or listen to the story, depending on my mood. The audio book is narrated by Cole Ferguson, who does a wonderful job in bringing the characters to life. I must admit I was a little disappointed that Benjamin L. Darcie was no longer narrating the books, but Cole Ferguson's voice sounded just as sexy, so all in all, I wasn't disappointed for long!

Venom is a fantastic character. I have enjoyed getting to know this particular dragon. He has a multitude of layers that get peeled back and revealed as the story progresses. This made me even more intrigued with him, as he has a few secrets that I never would have guessed, and a vulnerability that surprised me, as he struck me as a very confident man who is not afraid of much. That is, until he meets Evelyn Foxe.

Evelyn (Evie) Foxe is also a wonderful character. I liked her very much. She is normally an emotionally strong woman, who usually knows what she wants and goes for it, but now she's desperate. She is a forensic accountant, who has had the rug pulled out from under her feet and is struggling to find a job, and keep a Russian mobster off her back. Can Venom be her ticket out of the situation she finds herself in? Or will she be in more danger?

I have been eagerly waiting for the release of this book for some time. It was well worth the wait! I started to listen to the story and was quickly hooked. I have become totally addicted to this series! The story, in a way, continues on from Fury of Desire. There is a definite story arc beginning to appear and gather pace, as this story is told through several points of view and not just Venom's and Evie's.

All of the dragons from the Night Fury pack are worried about Gage and Hadar, who have gone missing in Prague. These two dragons have not featured much in the story up until now, but as the story arc opens up and the reader gets to see what is happening in Prague, they suddenly become extremely important. There's some seriously sick things happening in that part of the world, and Gage and Hadar find themselves in serious danger. I know it sounds a bit strange, but I really enjoyed their story, even though it's not very nice. There is lots of violence and danger, but these two are a force to be reckoned with. I must admit that Nian is not too shabby himself!
Back in Seattle, Ivar is waiting for results on his experiment, but even he is shocked at the results. Venom and Evie's romance is fraught with excitement and danger. However, I felt their story, although integral to the plot, got a little sidelined due to the larger story arc. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but if you compare the first story to this one, they have less page time together than Bastian and Myst. But, it makes a nice change to have an interracial coupling. I haven't read many books where this occurs, and it brings a different dimension to the story. It also makes me wonder about Sloan's story. Will we ever get to read it one day? I hope so. I reached the end of the story and though it doesn't end on a cliffhanger, it made me look forward to reading/listening to the next book in the series as soon as possible. I just hope I don't have to wait as long for it though!

Coreene Callahan has written another fantastic paranormal romance. She is fast becoming one of my favourite authors to read. Her books are fast paced, exciting and extremely addictive! I love her writing style and the flow is absolutely wonderful!

Due to the use of bad language and the explicit sexual scenes, I do not recommend this book for younger readers. However, I highly recommend this book if you love erotic paranormal romances or books with sexy dragon shifters! - Lynn Worton

Review:

SoldSold by Brad Lee Hayword
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a chilling horror story. I loved it!

Kate Spradlin is a character I neither liked nor disliked. She came across as rather ordinary and boring at first. However, she has a deep secret hidden in a past that is not so happy. But destiny (or is it fate?) will bring her and Carl to an old house where evil lurks.

Carl Spradlin is Kate's husband. He is a wonderful character. I liked him a lot more than Kate. I don't really know why. I just felt that he is a good man, who is willing to work hard to provide for his family.

This is a genre that I very rarely read. However, I had the opportunity to help edit a rough draft of this book, and wanted to see what the finished article looked like.
When I first read that rough draft, I had felt chills run up and down my spine, but reading the final story had the hair standing up on the back of my neck.

This story is told through various characters' points of view, which I really enjoyed. The story is peppered with weird and wonderful characters. Alfred Packer is one of the first serial killers and lived in Williamsburg in 1887. His exploits are rather gruesome, and some of the details of his actions are a little graphic. Therefore, readers beware. He is the original owner of the house which Carl and Kate move into.
I really didn't like Rex Fontaine, Kate's ex. He is a creepy character, who is obsessed with his former wife. He is incredibly cruel and abusive. However, I felt his character could have been utilised better by the author as the story progressed. Nevertheless, his presence is chilling and carries a menace that had me sitting on the edge of my seat, wondering what he was planning next. I really liked Mrs. Goddard, she is a wonderfully sharp character whose feud with one of the ladies from the Historical Society called Jane Dillard made me smile, though it's no laughing matter. Secrets are revealed and lives are in danger, but watching Kate grow into her potential as a powerful witch has been an adventure that I wouldn't have missed for all the world.

The difference between the rough draft and the complete story is amazing. The story has changed in various ways, but also remains the same. There are several twists and turns which were not in the original draft I read, and I found myself swept into a story that is suspenseful, atmospheric and chilling. The ending has a twist that definitely sent a shiver down my back. I wonder if we've seen the last of Alfred Packer?

Brad Lee Hayword has written a chilling debut horror story. His writing style is not particularly fast paced, but his ability to describe scenes with such clarity made the story stand out. The flow of the story could have been a little better, as some of the scene changes (I feel) caused the pacing to be a little jerky. I found this story to be highly entertaining, though there is room for improvement, and I am looking forward to reading more from this author in the future.

Due to scenes of violence which are on the graphic side, I do not recommend this book to young readers, or those of a nervous disposition. I do, however, highly recommend this book if you love classic dark thriller or horror genres. - Lynn Worton

I'm an Old West history buff, an obligation if you live in Texas. I mean look around, what else could produce this? It's a different world here, folks, and I only know that because my work occasionally demands travel. My education is the normal run, high school then EMT and firefighting academy. That didn't last. I went back to school after my accident and got a degree in fire science. Going back to school, having just lost my soon to have been fiance, I discovered solace in writing my thoughts. I've been writing since, but Sold is the first story I've ever shared with anyone. I write in this journal pretty often and I guess sharing some stuff about me isn't all that bad. I still don't see why anyone would want that and you might agree after reading Sold and wonder, "what kind of mind could go there?"

Review:

Entwined (Eternal Guardians, #2)Entwined by Elisabeth Naughton
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the second book in the Eternal Guardians series. I loved it!

My sister recommended this series to me as she had read them all (that have been released so far) and thought I would enjoy it, and she was right! I downloaded this as an audiobook, as I had previously enjoyed listening to the first book in the series, Marked, in audiobook too. Entwined is again narrated by Elizabeth Wiley. She did another fantastic job in telling the story. Her narration was crystal clear and her interpretation of the characters brought them to life.

Zander is an interesting character. I really liked him, but he has a serious issue with self-pity at first, which I found a bit off putting for a hero. He is one of the oldest of the Argonaughts and, as he is from Achilles bloodline, believes himself to be immortal. Nevertheless, as the story progresses, he pulls his head out of his you-know-what and is actually a great person to know, who realises that everyone has their weakness and his happens to be his soul mate.

Callia is a wonderful character. She is the King's physician and has the power to heal. I really liked this strong willed woman. She has had to endure a lot over the last ten years, but her spirit has not been broken. But when Zander volunteers to marry Isadora, her world comes crashing down around her ears.

This story is another roller coaster ride, full of action, adventure and danger. Adalanta is busy preparing her demons for war with the Argonaughts, and has a secret weapon in her arsenal, though he's not very willing. This secret weapon is a young boy by the name of Max, who is ten years old. I really liked Max. He is a very resourceful young man, who has had to endure years of abuse and cruelty at the hands of Adalanta, and has had to do some terrible things to survive. His courage and determination to escape his "Mataras" to find his real mother had me cheering him on. Callia also finds out a secret about herself which, although it surprised her, didn't really surprise me. But it made me look at the King in a slightly different light!

As the story progressed, I fell in love with all of the Argonaught warriors, and the story in general. This is a fast paced, action packed adventure from beginning to end.
As I said in my review for Marked, "This story is mostly a typical paranormal romance, with lots of action and danger mixed in. However, there are several twists and turns that keep one guessing at what is really going on.", but after listening to this story I realised that there is a bigger story arc within each storyline, and I am looking forward to finding out what that story arc will reveal. One thing I will say about this story (and series) is the world building is excellent. The characters are well developed and extremely lifelike. I have always been intrigued with Greek gods and their offspring such as Hercules, whose exploits became legend (or are they myth?) over time. So reading about his descendants, who were with Jason on his voyage for the Golden Fleece, excites me. I am also a huge sucker for paranormal romances in general, so I am looking forward to continuing with this series and I will (hopefully) get to read/listen to Tempted as soon as I can.

Elisabeth Naughton has written an exciting paranormal romance series. I love her fast paced writing style and the flow is wonderful. I will be continuing to read this series, but I do have one of her romantic suspense novels sitting on my Kindle, which I hope to now read in the near future too!

Due to scenes of a sexual nature that are on the explicit side, I do not recommend this book for younger readers. However, I highly recommend this book if you love erotic paranormal romances. - Lynn Worton

Why I am in crises

My current existential fear.

Well now.  This may not sound like much to some of you, but some of us, ok me, really find this troubling.
I am a reader.  Adding Avid in front of that sounds ..... Stupid. I average more than 200 books a year.  I have a full time job.  I have a house and a household.  I have two businesses I run on the side.  I adore music but basically get little time to indulge in real listening since I usually read while listening to music to start with.  So I listen to music mostly only while driving.  I love that.

Unfortunately I also like watching television.  Some shows, some series, keeps me occupied for days since I wait until I can watch an entire season before I watch it, this waiting from week to week, cussing any callers cause it may make me lose out on some part of my current episode.  Unexpected guests calling usually during the ultimate season finale of my latest obsession.  All of these drive me nuts.  So I record it.  Then when I have a season or more to watch I sit down and I start on a marathon of television watching.

It is fun.

Now here is my crisis.  These days it seems as if they (you know them) the powers that be in the great infinite Hollywood universe) well then, they go and make a decision. And they cancel my show.  Sometimes into a part of it. Mostly they manufacture an ending to close it down. And in this lies my crises.  I feel as if I am short changed. My love of certain shows gets to be nullified by the fact that only 4.2 million Americans are watching the show or heaven forbid. Only 2.4 million.  Somehow this number is only ever valid for Americans. The international following is never ever part of the greater decision making.

So now, unless a series is not into its 5th season I feel as if I am not allowed to really like a show anymore because the more I do, the less chance it apparently has of being a success.  Money makes the world go round. But if it is not passion driven or love then I wonder why on earth should I care? And if I do care, I am left feeling like Sheldon Cooper.  Why oh why do they make a SyFy channel for us nerds – catering for ahm nerds. Only to make sure that if not enough nerds watch the show then they stop it without any further notice, leaving us to ponder the many many ways in which our newest obsession could have ended if it was allowed to run it’s course.  Now consider this.  Lost, you remember that old show.  A plain, a crash, others, a few drop dead gorgeous men... that ran too long.  The last season made about as much sense as driving into a pillar of sugar in the middle of a river. If you want to end something, then at least read and watch the first few seasons to make sure you keep true to the story line... well I would have but apparently once stuff does not mean anything anymore then ending it rationally is also no longer an option.  It drives me nuts.
Revolution, ended after S2.  I am crazy over this show, so is most of my friends, but that does not matter, now does it?

How does this apply to books.  Well it really has less to do with it than the blog in general should have you believe. Consider however 50 Shades Of Grey, if you liked the book then you like the movie.  If you did not like the book you would not watch the movie and still they make it... could they not have used that money to finish some of my favourite series.

No consider if you will. Game of Thrones based on the books....the books is only up to book 5 while apparently their maybe up to 8 books in the series.  So what are we to expect. A season six in the tv series with no corresponding book? Heaven help us.

Book Review of Life Over Love by Cheryl Seagraves

Book Title: Life Over Love
Genre: Contemporary Fiction
Pages: 449
Author: Cheryl Seagraves
Date Published: 23 July 2013

Synopsis:

Brianna Garcia once was a spirited woman with an infectious smile and loyal heart. She was the most devoted mother, totally the opposite of her abusive husband. She felt at her lowest when she thought the only way for things to get better was for one of them to die. Eventually push came to shove, the decision had to be made, and Brianna chose to live.

Review:

Life Over LoveLife Over Love by Cheryl Seagraves
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I was recommended this book through a reading group I am in. Although it's not in my normal, preferred genre, I decided to give it a try. I did enjoy it though.

Brianna Garcia is a character that a lot of women who have been in abusive relationships can relate to. She has an inner strength that gets hidden deep inside when her marriage becomes a waking nightmare. To save her children and herself from more pain, she will have to dig deep to reach that strength.

This is a deeply emotive story, which I cannot relate to much as I have never been in such a relationship. However, I could certainly empathize with the character of Brianna. I could feel her hurt and confusion as she struggled to find a way to escape from Mike, her husband. What intrigued me about the story is that it got me wondering about relationships, and what it was in men's lives, like Mike, that created the switch from a loving husband to a bitter and angry man. In this story, this aspect was not explored by the author much as she focuses mostly on Brianna. Certainly, there is no such thing as a perfect relationship in the real world and this story reflects this. However, there is usually a motive or reason for this change in attitude. Yes, alcohol plays a part in many abusive relationships, but there is usually something else lurking in the background like stress, dissatisfaction in a job or in a situation. In Mike's case, his attitude changes due to a perceived alcoholic injustice, which quickly spirals out of control.

I liked watching Brianna grow and flourish in her new life. I also liked meeting Officer Ryker Danner. He seems like a nice man, but felt his character wasn't as well developed as it could have been. I'm all for instant attraction and all that, but I didn't feel the chemical spark between the characters; instead of a raging inferno, all I got was a glowing ember. This is not necessarily a bad thing though. There are many different types of love, and passion is only one aspect of this mysterious emotion. Other readers may disagree with me, but you are welcome to read this book and decide for yourself. I loved meeting Dominique, the hairdresser. She is a wonderful character, full of warmth and wisdom. She made me laugh at times too.

Cheryl Seagraves has written an emotional roller coaster ride from start to finish, but I feel that this book could be made better by having a professional editor or proofreader go through it to give it a bit of "spit and polish". Her writing style is not especially fast paced, but the story's flow was wonderful and it made the book seem shorter. I would definitely consider reading more books by this author in the future.

I recommend this book to readers who love women's fiction or contemporary romance. - Lynn Worton

St Patricks Day, green ale, and a book box set.

So today is the day before St Patty's day.

Yes, you know.  Irish.  Beer.  GREEN.

And for some reason the above sentiment is true the world over.  On the 17Th of March we are indeed all Irish.  Since I am a half breed between German and Irish I feel a special kin' ship to the Irish isle..

So on my review group we decided to do something special..... and I asked Lynn to word it for me so that everybody on all sides of the Isle can understand it...here it is.  Take it away Lynn..

Wanda has given me the task of letting you know that we are planning on holding a competition here, within the group, to celebrate St. Patrick's Day on the 17th March. This is open to all members of the group, and will require some thinking caps to be worn over the coming days.
We are planning on holding a limerick competition, which will be judged by the members of this group. The limericks are not to be too risqué due to the fact that the winning limerick is to be included in our group anthology, which is currently being written under the banner of "The Art of WaAr". What we are looking for is a limerick that not only is unique, but can fit in the "art" theme of the anthology (if at all possible, but not essential), be it about music, movies, sculpture or paint (or derivatives thereof), so get those creative juices flowing! But it is also meant to be fun, and at least rhyme! However, this may seem harder with this restriction, so this is why we are giving you until the 16th to come up with something. If you are still struggling to fit a type of art in, just write a normal limerick. Who knows? It may just win!

Once the 17th arrives, all limericks will be posted under one post, where the group (those who are actively participating) will give their votes by liking the one/s they like best. The limerick with the most likes at the end of the day wins.
If you are interested in joining in, please comment below.
Here's a limerick I've just made up (I could have gone the rude route, but I wanted you to see what I meant. This is just an example and will not be used in the competition):
There once was a young man called Bart
Who ran away from school because he didn't like art.
His mother did scold
But he grew bold
And broke his poor mother's heart.

So by now I am sure you are asking yourself what is "The Art of WaAr"?

Simply put in the words of Robert Warr

The Art of WaAr
We are members of a dynamic group that includes many imaginative and very talented writers.
But are we generous?

In a major new group initiative we have decided to produce a box set (February 2016) called 'The Art of WaAr' the proceeds of which will go towards charity.
We are looking for between seven and ten authors to contribute a book for this project and already have definite promises from Nathan Squires, Uvi Poznanski and Robert Warr.
There are no restrictions on genre although all books should have art a theme. Any type of art from painting to dance, sculpture to mime. Any connection from the artist as protagonist to victim. You choose.

WaAr

Reading is not always the only good thing for the soul. And since I read tons, I should know.

So here is what my weekend consisted off with high-lights only.

I started with this;

and this;

The above container is one of a set.  The set and the dove have some sentimental value to me so I decided it is time to do something about them and my CURB value.

So I asked on Facebook.  Easiest and cheapest way to strip rust etc from iron.

The answer

Yes as easy as pie.  Coca-Cola and steel wool.  Let me tell you, it works like a charm.  Lots less labour intensive.

So soon I went from the above to the in between stage where hope is born.

And not long after that I was left with this  ---

And what does this mean apart from new nice colour in my garden.
It means I tried something for the first time in a long time and did it without pain or injury. Thus I got a boost for my ego.

It also means I now am looking forward to pushing more boundaries, totally self imposed in the near future.

It also means that I was out in the sun shine sweating like a pig, playing with the dogs and getting a physical and a mental detox.

Which all adds up to this.

A happier Wanda.

So here is my challenge to you.

When was the last time YOU did something for the FIRST TIME?

Review:

Creatura (Creatura, #1)Creatura by Nely Cab
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I originally read and reviewed this book in 2011. However, since then, it has been re-edited and also turned into an audio book. Since I loved the original story, I wanted to see what the audio book sounded like.

Helen Cricco's narration was excellent. She managed to bring the characters to life. Her interpretation of Isis's voice was spot on. Her speaking voice was pleasant to listen to and the cadence smooth.

Isis Martin is a wonderful character, though her angst did get on my nerves at times. She is a typical teen, who is having nightmares and is unable to sleep properly due to the fear created by a growling beast. She decides to confront her fear and finds herself facing a human-like creature. He assures her he is real and she challenges him to prove it; he does. When Isis meets David, sparks fly!

I LOVED this book! From the first line I was hooked, all over again! This story has an originality to it that most Young Adult authors try to bring to their books, but fail to. I couldn't stop listening to it. I felt for Isis as she tried to cope with the lack of sleep due to the nightmares. Then she meets David. Oh, David! I just love this character! He's a bit of an enigma at first, but he has a romantic side which made me swoon! However, he also has a jealous streak, which made him seem quite controlling at times. Listening to the story instead of reading it, let me follow my imagination a bit more. I loved meeting the Chios family again. The twins were just as likable and David's mom just as lovable as the first time I met them. The story swept me through various emotions and left me an emotional wreck. The ending has a magnificent twist, which I originally didn't see coming, but even knowing now that it was coming still didn't stop the impact of it; it was that powerful. The first time I read the book, my first original thought was "WOW!!!!" and I had to read it again to make sure I had read it correctly. My reaction this time was still the same. The surprise and shock of that last scene has stayed with me since the first time. Now I can't wait to find out what's going to happen in this trilogy!

This is Nely Cab's debut novel and I am amazed and in awe of her talent. I fell in love with her writing style, which is fast paced and exciting. The flow is also wonderful. I am a firm fan of this author and will read any books that she writes.

I highly recommend this YA paranormal romance to teens aged 16 upwards, and to adults who love to read Young Adult novels. - Lynn Worton
